Colours in Your Carpark: What Do Different Lines Mean?

4 February 2021

Clean cut lines in your Sydney carpark are always a must. On top of that, you have to make sure your colours are right. Different colours send different messages to your customers and clients and it’s important that these messages are clear. If they aren’t clear, you could be putting people in danger.

That’s why it’s so important to hire a professional Sydney line marking company like Sydney Sweep and Scrub. We’ll mark clear, concise lines for your carpark, using the appropriate colours to ensure that there’s no confusion. Here are the most common colours and what they can be used for.

The different meanings of coloured lines in a carpark

White Lines

White lines are by far the most common lines that appear in carparking facilities across Sydney and the rest of Australia.

These lines are usually used to denote standard spaces, as well as lanes, arrows and any other miscellaneous marking.

White is the standard colour for most Sydney carparking facility markings.

Most of the time, if the markings are white, they won’t be signifying anything special. At Sydney Sweep and Scrub, we use white the most.

Red Lines

Red lines will usually be used for some kind of warning or high-risk area of a carpark.

It’s traditionally an eye grabbing colour and therefore, should certainly be used to convey the most important messages in your carpark.

Red can make dangerous areas for pedestrians to avoid, parking restrictions, permit zones and any other important area.

Yellow Lines

Yellow lines add better visibility to a parking facility and in some cases, are used in place of the standard white markings.

This can be the case in spaces that receive no (or less than desirable) amounts of natural light, so that customers can better see the markings.

Yellow is commonly used to warn drivers about speed bumps and any other speeding deterrents as well.

Blue Lines

We usually see blue lines in a Sydney carpark to mark a disabled parking area.

Diagonal blue lines are also used often, to signifiy special zones like bin areas, loading zones and executive spaces.

Whilst it’s an eye catching colour in a grey Sydney carpark, blue is a little more neutral than red so is good for a range of uses.

Green lines

Green lines can be used to denote eco-friendly or special-purpose zones, such as:

  • Electric vehicle (EV) charging bays

  • Carpool or rideshare pickup zones

  • Environmentally designated parking

Green is associated with safety and sustainability, making it a good fit for modern, eco-conscious carparks.

Black lines

While not commonly used on their own, black lines may be applied over older markings to obscure them during reconfiguration. They’re also used in contrast painting when marking lines on lighter surfaces.

Orange lines

Orange is sometimes used in temporary situations or to mark construction or maintenance zones within a carpark. It signifies caution and change, so it’s perfect for areas that may not be permanent or are under review.

Purple lines

Less common but growing in usage, purple can be used to indicate:

  • Speciality bays (e.g. car-share or delivery-only parking)

  • Reserved zones for specific customers or services

Purple can help differentiate non-standard areas without using traditionally alert colours like red or yellow.
